The E3ED operating system has memory areas pinned (never swapped to secondary storage). Other terms used are locked, fixed; Constant, or wired, number of pages. For example, an interrupt mechanism relies on an array of Pointers to its handlers, such as input-output completion and page errors. If the pages containing these Pointers or the code they invoke are pageable, interrupt handling becomes more complex and time-consuming, especially in the case of page error interrupts. Therefore, some parts of the page table structure are not pageable.
E3ED Some pages may be fixed for a short time, some pages may be fixed for a long time, and some pages may need to be fixed permanently. For example:
The paging manager code and drivers for the secondary storage device where the page resides must be permanently fixed, or the paging will not even work because the necessary code is not available.
Timing dependent components can be fixed to avoid variable paging delays.
Data buffers are accessed directly by peripherals in use or I/O channels must reside on fixed pages because such devices and buses expect to find data buffers at physical memory addresses; If a page error occurs, the transmission cannot be stopped and then restarted after handling the page error, regardless of whether the bus has an input-output memory management unit. For example, data may come from a measurement sensor unit, and real-time data lost due to page errors cannot be recovered.
